The harbour master of Leerdam thinks the Linge east of Leerdam is more beautiful than the first part. We think it doesn't make any difference: on every new corner, east or west of Leerdam, of the small river, the Linge is tempting to make new pictures.
Mill De Vlinder (Butterfly) at Deil (1913)
Our route this morning brings us to the end at Geldermalsen (at least the end for motor yachts - with a canoe one can go somewhat further east). Just before this town,
one finds the little village Tricht, which exactly 40 years ago (25 June 1967) complete was demolished by a real hurricane (7 death, lot of wounded, 1500 lost their home in 15 seconds) - at age of 18 that time, one doesn't forget such an usual nature catastrophe easily!
At Heukelum mooring
Geldermalsen itself isn't very exciting to our opinion. But in case one would need to do shopping, there is an Ahold supermarket at the harbour quay, and a diesel tank for thirsty ships. The route from Leerdam to the end takes 2 1/2 hours (speed limit, in order not to damage the banks!). Same time for the return route to Leerdam one has to take, because a round trip isn't possible. Not a punishment to do the same trip from the other side! Downside however is, there are ample mooring places, most of the banks are privately owned or rented. Only at the entrance of the Linge, at Heukelum, at Leerdam, at Asperen and at Geldermalsen mooring opportunities. But maybe that is just good, in order to preserve the beautiful nature.
At return we pass Leerdam, to see if still a night place left at Heukelum - which happens to be the case (but mostly is not, as is said to us). A very nice and very little village, nice to walk around both in the village itself (time seems to have stand still) as well as in its surroundings. Going west from the mooring place, one finds a specials walking trail over the dike and along the swamp-area alongside the river - not too many mosquito's this time of year, fortunately!
Cómplice in action on Merwede kanaal
After 4 days of sunshine, upon arrival a rain burst - getting us soaked when mooring. But we do not complain at all.
